Talvolta, pur avendo un codice composto da 16 caratteri, questo risulta errato. In fase di trascrizione potrebbe, infatti, capitare di invertire la posizione di due caratteri o interpretare erroneamente un carattere. Si prenda come esempio il seguente Codice Fiscale: RSSMR'''A'''85B15H501U La lettera A potrebbe essere scambiata per un 4, ottenendo così un codice fiscale errato. RSSMR'''4'''85B15H501U In questo caso, l'errore è facilmente riconoscibile, poiché i primi sei caratteri devono, obbligatoriamente, essere solo lettere.
